TURNSTYLES & JUNKPILES is my quiet little serenity. Just as I would indulge myself in the quieter moments of a REX album; I now have an entire album of significant tuneful solo steel-string guitar portraits with which to view. Even tho this is considered a Bundy Brown project (recorded in several spaces but mainly in Bundy's loft the Cool Blue Cave); it's Curtis Harvey's tunes that touch me the most profoundly. These 14 instrumentals are delicate compositions by Chicago's finest--ascending their creative peak as solo artists beyond their "other" well known projects.PULLMAN are an acoustic quartet featuring Bundy K. Brown of DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC, Curtis Harvey of REX, Chris Brokaw of COME, ex-CODEINE; Douglas McCombs of TORTOISE & ELEVENTH DREAM DAY with David Pajo who wrote and performed "Gravenhurst." It's an album more "accessible" (but no less enjoyable) than O'Rourkes 1997 "Bad Timing" (referring to the--at times--jarring experimentational aesthetic Jim injects his songs with e.g.. "Happy Trails.")The songs themselves are terse pointillistic vagabond-ish odes each with their own unique collective identity. A box within a trunk. From the innocently carefree "Barefoot" or the Ry Cooder-ish "Fullerton" (finding McCombs handily at the guitar) or "Beacon & Kent" to the spanish flavored walking stand-up bassline of "Lyasnya." It's not until we get to the second sides "Two Parts Water" that my ears really perk up. Equal parts introspective/crafty/festive up-tempo vignettes for a dehumanized modern man.
