Track-By-Track
1. “This Side of Paradise”
“This Side of Paradise” came from a greatly modified riff that Avery had come up with, but we couldn’t really fit anywhere so we ended up making the riff sound much darker than it had before. The chorus for this song went through at least five different transformations before we found what fit best. Dylan wrote probably 90% of these lyrics and I just helped with more of the structuring of the lines.
2. “Mercy”
Austin came to me with the riff for this song, and I had just seen Queens of the Stone Age live so I wanted to experiment with some alternate and heavier tuning, so this song ended up being in drop D. Lyrically I wrote the verses while Dylan came up with the chorus.
3. “Come and Get it Now”
“Come and Get it Now” was a song that evolved out of a drum and bass jam session between me and Dylan. We wrote this song really quickly and lyrically we just wrote a fairly standard blues rock song about coming back to a girl.
4. “Dig! The Radio”
“Dig! The Radio” was a song that we had the musical structure of for years, but we could never really find lyrics we all loved for it. Eventually me and Dylan sat down and just tried stream of consciousness to try and emulate the ’70s acid rock style of lyrics and that’s how we landed with what we have now.
5. “I’ve Got a Thing for Pleasure”
“Pleasure” came about the first time Avery ever came over for a band practice. He was just messing around on a guitar when he just started playing that riff. He said he had that riff in his head for a while and it was the thing that made me really confident that he would gel well with the rest of us.
