Released two years prior to their formal album A Blend Of Silk & Satin, The Greencoats touched down with this delightful four song EP. Three of the songs did not show up on that formal album, and the song that did, “Stay Awhile,” was slightly different, and while tracking in at about the same time, showed that the group where in the process of revising their presentation. All of the material found here is more aggressive around the edges, and more in line with the track “27 Soon In Heaven,” the most sonically demanding song on the album. Nevertheless, this is a fine take on other material by the band and shows that they are not one trick ponies, capable of ratcheting up the atmosphere and soaring at higher altitudes, where flight requires a bit more strength to make headway. The question I would pose to the group would be if this change in the character of the music was in response to this EP, resulting in A Blend Of Silk & Satin being delivered in a more restrained fashion, an attitude I certainly enjoyed, and an attribute few bands take advantage of when releasing EP’s, and that’s listening to what the feedback of fans, because after all, it’s important to know which side of your bread is buttered, though without selling out and remaining true to the nature of the band’s vision. On a lighter note, it’s worthy to consider that The Greencoats are an eight piece collection of musicians ideas and concepts … it would not surprise me in the least that there might be much tugging and pulling when it comes to implementing those visions.Review by Jenell Kesler
