Notes

Includes digital download code. Gatefold sleeve.

The first pressing of this LP has been recalled. This entry is for the first pressing. Official statement from the Label:
The release date for the Car Seat Headrest album “Teens Of Denial” has been pushed back from May 20 to later in the summer due to a recall of physical product, so that a song containing elements of a composition by Ric Ocasek could be removed and replaced. Matador had negotiated for al icense in good faith months ago, only to be told last week that the publisher involved was not authorized to complete the license in the United States, and that Ric Ocasek preferred that his work not be included in the song. Matador regrets that it was not informed of this much earlier, and has made changes to respect Mr. Ocasek’s wishes.

Question on the problematic material used... Was it a straight SAMPLE that they had to re-record as CSH playing the song? My version still has the snippet of the Cars song, but as played by CSH, not a sample of the actual recording by The Cars. Help! I can't listen to the original, so I'm counting on you to let me know.
Gathris
Thank you for the additional info! Super-helpful. I'm listening to it now to see which version I have... Turns out it's the recalled version!
Flocton
The problem material is all played by CSH, but lyrics and melody are played for long enough to clearly violate copyright laws.
Jaberini
The recalled version of the song features about fifteen seconds of additional guitar introduction that is the opening from the Cars song, and the end of the song is a full cover of the first verse of the Cars song. In both cases the music is played by the band not sampled. The reissued version of the song has only about a second of two of the introduction before Will starts to sing, and the ending is replaced with samples from an interview Will gave mixed with a sample from a previous Car Seat Headrest song, I believe its the Teens of Style version of "Something Soon".

Where's the entry for the non-recalled, regular black vinyl edition of this amazing album? My copy came in the mail today... :)[never mind, just created this entry]

Was randomly perusing my lists on Amazon yesterday and saw that they had Teens of Denial in stock but that it would take "2-3 days" to process. Ordered it thinking it was probably just the preorder listing for the post recall version, but it shipped last night and the listing only has 3rd party sellers now. I'm wondering if it's just the second disc with the first to come later. Anyone received a copy from Amazon with some insight?
Shakar
My CD purchased from Amazon includes "Just What I Needed / Not Just What I Needed". Ordered it Saturday, received it today.

I was SO surprised to find a copy of this sitting on my doorstep when I got home from a weeklong trip. I read about the recall due to an unauthorized sample (on my second favorite track, no less) and was ecstatic to discover that I have a copy with this sample intact. I wonder how many of them snuck out.

There are currently two entries here on Discogs for the recalled 2xLP. I have one, and chose this entry, as it matches the catalog number closer than the other entry (it's OLE-1091-1 instead of the OLE-1091-2P listed here, but that's closer than the other entry's OLE-1071-1).I pre-ordered on Amazon 8 days before release date and still ended up getting the recalled version, complete with the original version of "Just What I Needed / Not Just What I Needed." I see Amazon is no longer selling it, but I wonder if the copies they had in place before the "recall" were really recalled. How rare is this thing, really? Was I really just lucky that Amazon didn't cancel my order? Is this record bound to be a collector's item? It's crazy to think people are already paying $100 or more for this version.

A year and a half later and people are still paying insane prices for this variant. I really thought more copies would make it out into the wild, but apparently not. I guess us folks who pre-ordered on Amazon lucked out.
Yellow Judge
because vinyl is collectible so people's wallets will go empty.
Rainshaper
I thought the track that sampled The Cars was called "There Is a Policeman in All Our Heads, He Must Be Destroyed”?
Hiylchis
The track Just What I Needed/Not Just What I Needed is actually a lot better without The Cars sample so idk why people want the recalled version so much. Even Will Toledo said the song got much better once he fixed it without the sample.
Windworker
I also preordered from Amazon about the same time frame as you and also received the recalled version, which actually arrived a day before its actual release. Seems to be an error on Amazons part as Matador did put a recall out on the album. We may never know how many actually made it out into the wild.

First 100 LP's ordered from the Matador webstore were autographed by Will Toledo. I got one of them and am pretty amused by the fact he also dated it (only because I have never seen anyone else sign stuff that way unless it's a legal document). Anybody else get this version? They sent out jackets with the second LP for the people that preordered but had to pull the first one due to the copyright issues with Cars. Second LP sounds pretty good on my copy. Looking forward to hearing the A/B sides once they are pressed and shipped out!
Pooker
I also received the signed pre-order, which was shipped without shrink. First LP with A/B sides wasn't pulled, however. Has the full, original version of Just What I Needed / Not Just What I Needed.
Flower
I got a copy with the autograph but not dated

I actually really like that he dated them. Mine was 4/29/16. I'm a big fan of the packaging and presentation, not to mention the music. Really glad I was able to get this.
