Shomeshet
Essentially a placeholder between the Braille Night and Heart Like a River albums, this release combines a few new odds and ends with multiple remixes of two songs from Will You Find Me. Not the best place to start with this band, but devoted fans will likely find things to love about it.The new material is mostly instrumental: The opener "Strings" is just that, a piece for lush string ensemble, variations of which seem to pop up elsewhere in various forms - most notably in "Shoreline", a beautiful 13-minute suite that sounds like it could have come from a Rachel's album. In a similar vein, "Should've Called" is a pretty shorter piece for guitars and strings. The album's title track is a gorgeous ballad penned by Tim Thomas (Babe the Blue Ox).As for the remixes: Two versions of "Shotgun", by Warn Defever (His Name Is Alive) and Trina Shoemaker (unknown to me), both quite nice and respectful of the original; and four of "Shrug" - by Shoemaker, Sasha Frere-Jones (again, both enjoyable), a very abstract yet interesting dub version (uncredited), and ending with the mood-shattering LA Blues Mix, in which a surprisingly faithful cover of the crazy noise freakout by the Stooges eventually (if you can make it to 4:55) gives way to gently repetitive harmonized vocals that might actually be derived from the song "Shrug" and were possibly heard backwards in the Frere-Jones mix.
