Yellow Judge
A more than interesting and well done neo-psychedelic album, though the numbers “My Secret Country,” “Don’t Feel Bad,” “Mystic Green” and “Go West” are so strong that the rest of the songs nearly pale in comparison. With the first album being so strong, this release was no doubt the reason Rain Parade were never heard from again, but then it’s not uncommon to find sophomoric efforts that shine less brightly. Speaking of those lush and dream laden tracks only, they come off with an effortless breathability, creating an intoxicating atmosphere drawn straight from those heady days and nights of the mid 60’s, fresh with anticipation and dreamlike presentation, where the band stands with sure footedness, delivering memorable songs that will never be forgotten. Surely a band ahead of their time who never managed to have the backing or professional management and production team to steer them down the avenue they so dearly endeavored to venture. There are several live bootlegs that are worthy of note, and show how remarkable Rain Parade were in a a venue setting. Though not listed here, and not at all pricey, is a fifteen song compilation on Mau Mau Records [MAUCD 611] of both Emergency Third Rail Power Trip along with Explosions In The Glass Palace that sums up those two outings wonderfully, and for the money is a hands down no-brainer. I for one delighted in creating my own compilation from all of their material, finding it to be relentlessly satisfying, delivering one bit of hazy wander after another, completely devoid of any filler.Regardless, if this is one of those bands you’ve missed out on, there’s no time better than now to add something enticing to your musical life.Review by Jenell Kesler
