I found out about Disen Gage on the music-purchase platform Bandcamp, and haven't looked back since. Excellent jazzy prog-rock abounds, with hilarious accents from German polka ("Planet Plyuk"), spy-chase soundtracks ("Landing"), Primus-esque funky dissonance ("Parovoz," "God Saw Otherwise"), and King Crimson-style arpeggios ("Exyrinx," "Lehaim to N.E.P."). A couple of compositions are less than engaging, with more ambiance than songwriting (see "To Kill Kenny" and "Planet Khanud"), but they are far outweighed by the spry charm of the more complex and witty numbers. Oh -- and the only track I haven't mentioned, "Laxatives are Included," is an absurd, understated, hilarious journey through the brilliant collective mind of this band of Ph.D.'s. Also on R.A.I.G. Records: captivating Russian prog-rock band Air Canda and excellent, diverse Canadian hard rock from Old Major. You can find all of it for cheap on Bandcamp.com.P.S. According to the credits, only guitars, bass and drums were used to record this album. That means that all those instruments you hear -- pump organ, trumpet, brass section, flute, synth keyboard, vibraphones, calliope and steel drums -- are effects pedals. Now are you hooked?
