Casey Kasem used to have a segment on his old T.V. show called "It should've been a #1 Hit" about songs that got left behind by the panel of public sentiment. This whole album by Peter Murphy is that way. Following his success with "Cuts You Up" in 1990, He had every reason to expect great success with his followup album in 1992. He and his band were still performing at the top of their game--tweaking their progressively harder and more dramatic pop sound. He appeared on the short-lived Dennis Miller show. His Video for the "Sweetest Drop" was crazy awesome. The only difference in 1992 was that no one gave a sh*t. It is unfortunate because this album is every bit as deserving of great praise as he got two years before. However, a world that had just witnessed Nirvana for the first time (and not long from seeing Oasis) was on the warpath to distance themselves from the main acts of the 1980's. It seems peripheral musicians like Peter Murphy were to fall victim to this changing trend as well. Perhaps his greatest song as a solo artist is on this album--entitled "Hit Song" no less--and to this day he has likely never gotten the praise he deserves for it. If you are thinking of buying this album think no longer--it's definitely worth the price. If you can find a rare vinyl copy, even better. The singles are worth it too--they have some of the best live performances of his career on them.
