“I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris because only stone and steel accept my love.” Need anything more be said? Years Of Refusal sees Morrissey coming back to set the record straight yet again in the proces saluting Paris with one of the most beautiful city love songs I know of. Paris, take a bow! Generally, though, Years Of Refusal embraces a more rock ‘n’ roll inspired sound reminding me of “Your Arsenal” from 1992. If you want indie pop oriented Morrissey go for “Ringleader” or older stuff. This is a band having a great time and wanting to flash their live balls. An approach I can do with. All You Need Is Me is a splendid example – and one already released on the Greatest Hits compilation from 2008. Now we just need the tacky badge – tsk tsk!! But this is Morrissey 2009. Up front, angry as always, and a utterly self assured arse. How he gets away with it is almost incomprehensible. But thanks! The question is for how long? Morrissey himself reminds that “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell”. Well, just don’t jump to conclusions.
