At the heart of it, this a hard rock album with some definite influence from new wave and therefore, some(guitar) synthesizer usage. The simple line in 'Beg, Borrow Or Steal' works quite effectively with the driving drum beat. 'Where Did The Time Go' and 'Look in Your Eye' are obvious singles, but they're solid tracks - and even if things can get somewhat cheesy (hey, it's 80's rock), it has some really nice melodies; the chorus/breakdown in 'Where Did The Time Go'. Then, counter these with one of the meanest songs Glenn's ever done, 'Muscle and Blood' (made even more so on the 'Burning Japan Live' album). There's really powerful and crisp layered guitar lines throughout, thanks to Thrall, and they really bring out the vocal melodies. Hughes sometimes overdoes his vocals (see: 'First Step Of Love' - an ill-advised Cannock accent in here too - and 'Hold Out Your Life') but it sounds like he's actually having fun! This album has the best version of 'Coast To Coast', and the vocals are emotional and just spot-on. After a rut of about 6 years after 'Play Me Out', he both needed and deserved it. It's a shame he several personal issues in the years after this album. One of the real highlights is the punchy, driving, fantastically well-produced drumming (can we thank Mr. Johns for this after working with Bonzo?). I wish more albums had a drum sound like this, the 80's really had some unmatched production for drums. Listen to the drum and bass grooves on 'Who Will You Run To' - great stuff. I'd also like to know which drummers played on each track, but we can make some assumptions. I'd say it's probably Ferguson (who went to work on several further releases with Hughes) on 'Beg, Borrow' and 'Muscle'. I'd like to think it's Banali - who I've had a lot of respect for after hearing WASP's 'Headless Children' and 'The Crimson Idol' - on 'First Step of Love'. Not overly flashy, just damn tasteful. I think that sums up the album. It's quite short, but it's sweet and it's very listenable. Definitely up there as one of my favourite Hughes releases.
