First off I must disclose that I am a Japanese hardcore fanatic and the COMES are one of my favorite punk bands of all-time. In addition, as someone just old enough to remember tape trading, I have a pretty high tolerance for poor sound quality. Poor sound quality tolerance is a necessary factor for anyone who truly wishes to delve deeply into the realms of underground music. However, the sound quality on COMES-"Live '82-'84" is at times VERY good and always more than listenable! That such wonderful recordings existed, yet were not better circulated (at least in the USA) is surprising. Certainly, because this 2CD release was culled from four different gigs, there is variation sound quality wise with some of the tracks sounding better than others. However, even the lowest quality audience recordings in this collection are quite listenable (and in some ways even more interesting due to the sense of ambience of the room/club/etc. where the performance occurred, as well as those present in the crowd. So if you're worried about sound quality DO NOT let that be the factor which prevents you from checking out this great release! I personally feel this release has better sound than the COMES-"Live '85-'86" 2CD collection (featuring their more metallic, pre-Gastunk sound and songwriting that one needs to be able to hear a bit clearer to fully enjoy). But the best thing about the COMES-"Live '82-'84" is the songs, many of which were never captured in a studio setting. Also, to hear the sheer energy and skill of this amazing multi-gender band in a live atmosphere is just incredible. There are many moments on this release where I found myself getting goose-bumps from the sheer ferocious (yet catchy) nature of this one of a kind band's live intensity. So if you're a person who's played "No Side" over and over (as well as the comp. tracks) but always wished their was MORE of the pre-"Power Never Die" styled COMES, here it is!!! And as a postscript I must say that I am not trying to disparage latter-era COMES material such as "Power Never Die" LP '86. There is just such a difference in style between the early manic punk era COMES (i.e "No Side" LP) and the latter more melodic heavy metal stylings of "Power Never Die" LP '86. By the mid-80's members of the COMES were moving a bit away from the early 80's energetic, balls-out, high speed punk (as captured so brilliantly on "Live '82-'84") and towards a heavier more metallic sound which in the end played a huge role in giving us the rad metal/punk/goth/post-punk/noise stylings of Gastunk.
