“Fourth Of July” truly is a single, comprised of just two songs, exactly the way it was presented on the vinyl release. “Fourth Of July” is a great outing, filled with Dylan-ish wordplay, Beatle references, and a goofy lyrical story delivered with the sly ambition of deadpan seriousness that’s compelling enough to hold your attention from the first word to the last note. But it’s here that Galaxie 500, like their Beatle referenced counterparts, spin the top yet again, and turn back the clocks. I’m sure that by this time in their career Dean Wareham, Naomi Yang, and Damon Krukowski have all but reached the breaking point when it came to Velvet Underground comparisons and influences ... so much so that there was no place for them to go other than to pull out all the stops, and jump in with heartfelt choppy guitar work balanced by Naomi’s rich, but tender bass, on their cover of The Velvet’s “Here She Comes Now.” Almost saying, “If this is what you want, then this is what we’ll give you.” Of course the comparisons are justified, The Velvet Underground were a huge influence, so it really is left to the listener to figure out if this is a sly thumbing of the nose, or a gracious nod to one of the most stunning bands of all time. "Here She Comes Now" would never find its way onto an album until the boxed set was released, and being an import, this puppy is rather difficult to find.It was around this time, during rather bad weather, that I was able to catch Galaxie 500 at Swarthmore College, where a mere handful of devoted fans braved the elements to sit on a cold floor, in dead silence, with our mouths wide open ... knowing full well that we were witnessing history in the making. It would be years later that I’d learn that both the band, and aspects of Dean’s life were unraveling at that very moment, which just added another dimension to an evening I’ll never forget.
