Pete Donnelly walked through my front door all grins and smiles with an as yet to be released copy of The Figgs' new album The Day Gravity Stopped in hand ... I held my breath, knowing it was for me, yet unable to believe my eyes. Though believing my eyes wasn’t the issue, hearing these songs that no one else has heard was, and I was feeling mighty proud, if not just a bit full of myself, grinning from ear to ear, like I’d just found a twenty dollar bill floating down the street. You may know Pete Donnelly’s solo work, or his righteous addition as a member of the legendary NRBQ, both of which may give you a clue as to what’s housed here ... yet I promise you, it’s all different, and you’re gonna be most pleasantly surprised. This music, from a band who’ve been perfecting their trade for nearly twenty years, is infused, catchy, filled with enough blistering harmonized rockin’ hooks to induce dance steps I never thought I’d entertain, and chocked full of enough smokin’ 60’s AM stoner-rock radio inspired wonders to last all night and into the morning. These guys are solid, they complete each other’s musical statements, possess a wide unfaltering view of the horizon, relying on a unique stylized structure of no nonsense good times, and it's all mixed with a helping of kicking cans down the lane love songs that just feel so fine; like the sky is always blue. Sure, I could go on and say things like magical, mellow, or warmly frosted ... or I could simply say, "This was the day gravity stopped and I floated away, tethered only by a fragile string of musical notes that lead right back to The Figgs."Review by Jenell Kesler
