This album starts off in a dark mood, but cannot sustain that sense of dread for long. Unlike most people I am not a long-standing fan of CD, or indeed Goth in general. So as a kinda outsider I tend to see the influences standing out like the bones of some beast starved to a painful death. And even if they hadn't covered "Panic In Detroit" at the end of this album, the BOWIE tint to the music would have been glaringly obvious anyway. And BAUHAUS, of course (who themselves, you remember, released a cover of "Ziggy Stardust" from around the same period in BOWIE's career). But they do maintain their own distinctive style - a hysterical drama which is pelted out with burning conviction and a gusto driven by unbending belief in what one is doing. Often the voices, rather than being in any kind of harmony, tend to be fighting against one another, Hell-bent on reaching further heights of shit-scared banshee expression. Even as an unconvertable outsider to their sound you pick up on the superiority they have over the groundswell Goths. An entertaining album. Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
