the nearly-forgotten FIRST Deerhoof LP from the late '90s. This is when they were a two piece (guitar and drums) and this is monstrously fucked and heavy duo noise/improv. Heavy drums from one of the best out there, and serious scrape-age. way more fucked than the more 'out' bits of "the man, the king, the girl." if you're into that, then by all means seek this out. a couple complaints are that the LP is one of the WORST pressings i've seen for the late '90s?! Totally thin, slightly warped vinyl and some pressings defects (dimples in the vinyl and shit). Almost looks for a Jamaican pressing or something! and that the LP sleeve is just two almost 12"x12" squares pasted on to the white dust sleeve.

Greg told me that the original cover was silkscreen printed but they were stored in Rob's closet under a pile of clothes on which Rob's dog slept on. So they had to color photocopy and recreate the covers, which were glued on. So... at least there's a cute story to it.

Satomi is already present here; so it's a three piece I guess. Right about the pressing; I was about to complain to the seller, but eventually didn't do so.

Not a review, but an attempt to create an overview what's on this thing. While I identify 6 musically seperate units on side one, the 5 tracks listed above are more or less what later would become1. Tiger Chain (apparently uses same instrumental track as the version on "The Man..."-CD)2. Sophie3. Rat Attack (closing with a Queen Orca Wicca Wind-theme)4. (improv)5. ? - melody sounds a bit like Carriage, while "the man, the king, the girl" is the recurring line here (voc only - sounds very home-recorded)6. Carriage + some unidentified pre-determined material- with more or less improv thrown in. The long track on side 2 appears to be pretty much free formish... while at least the end seems to have some vocal-"theme" - hm, need to listen closer to this later.
