The technicolour preening band portrait on the rear sleeve (complete with makeup artist's brush still in action on one member's cheek..) prepared me to open the hate valve but annoyingly I ended up having to concede that everything about the round black object contained within is simply top notch. Sophisticated and adventurous writing, meticulously tight performances and stunning sonics. The two opening tracks in particular are just ridiculously infectious. I was impelled to track down a copy of the self-titled follow-up but found it a bit of a disco-y damp squib compared to this LP which must be one of the most underrated mainstream pop/rock efforts of it's period. It could almost be filed under 'pop-prog' and in fact was recently rereleased by the progressive Air Mail Archive label.
