It's been three years since VT released the masterpiece, "Our Own Masters". In this time, the band has changed three members leaving the core of singer, Valient Himself and Benjamin "Eidan Thorr" Earl. Quite frankly, I am just happy to have a new LP by these rock monsters after such a shakeup. Most bands would have folded under such circumstances but Valient Thorr found a way to rage back with Old Salt. While Old Salt may lack the immediacy and catchiness of Stranger and Our Own Masters, it still has plenty of hooks and energy to grab ahold of your soul. This record is full of disjointed rhythmic riffs and quite possibly the best vocal performances from the band on tape. It took more than one listen for me to really dig this LP... Sometimes records are like that. You know what I mean. Compared to VT's previous records, Old Salt seems darker, with lyrics about 'Watching the gods cry", being beat down (No count blues) and may possibly be addressing the band's near breakup on Worm Up (speculation). It is missing some of the fun of their previous efforts. That being said, Old Salt is a solid effort from a really solid band and is full of great riffs and smoking guitar solos.
