A very nice set of alternative mixes and versions of what later became 'Give The People What They Want'. A set of three acetate discs with a total of 12 tracks consisting of what Ray Davies thought what the next album could/should be. The people at Arista thought differently. Some of the tracks have been edited down and end up seconds or even minutes shorter that the ones that ended up on 'Give The People What They Want'. One of the most notable casulaties was 'Around The Dial'. The released version is 4:48 minutes long. The acetate version takes up 7:52 minutes! Mind you, a lot of those extra minutes is the intro of someone turning the radio dial. The title track is a approximately a minute longer than the officially released version. A few are suspiciously close to the original versions (Killer's Eyes, Back To Front, Add It Up) but a closer listen reveals that these are slightly different mixes. There are also a few nice 'new' surprises. The acetate version of Entertainment is the original 1981 mix and not the glossy version that was ultimaly released on UK Jive in 1989! And the acetate version of Bernadette is not the version we know from 1982's 'State Of Confusion' but a much rawer version with Dave Davies on the lead vocals. There are three extra bonus tracks. The nicest addition is the 1981 version of Massive Reductions. It was a B-side to 'Better Things' in 1981 and is a completely different version from the one released in 1984 on 'Word Of Mouth'. The second bonus track is 'Noise'. Probably recorded somewhere in 1981 and canned, but ultimately released as a B-Side to Come Dancing in 1982. A bit of a redundant track on this disc because it was made available on CD in 1999 as a bonus track on the remastered re-release of 'State Of Confusion'.The third track is a very good sounding demo version of Art Lover. It sounds suspiciously like the version that was released on The Kinks Singles Collection/The Songs Of Ray Davies in 1997.
