Texts in back cover:

Lee Perry first began his career for Clement Dodd at Studio One in the early sixties. He soon graduated to supervising the auditions and went on to become involved in the production side of things. Despite scoring a number of hits for Dodd he became unhappy with the financial deal he was getting and moved on, for a short time, to record for W.I.R.L. Circa 1968 Perry worked briefly for Joe Gibbs at Amalgamated before starting up his own Upsetter record label (the title is taken from one of Perry's Amalgamated sides).
Now fully in control of the direction his work was going in Perry signed a deal with Trojan in 1969 and the UK Upsetter label was set up as a Trojan subsiduary. The year also saw Perry begin work with Bob Marley and the Wailers, the relationship lasted until 1972 and provided the basic rhythms for a lot of Marley's later work. Throughout this period, and later, Perry used the best available session musicians for his recordings and they were credited with the name of the Upsetters. These early sides are now regarded by many as true classics and they certainly set a very high standard with, perhaps, the most popular of these being "Return Of Django". Although the line up of the Upsetters has changed over the years the same high standard has applied throughout. Perry's innovative production work and his willingness to experiment with rhythms and special effects have consistently led to new ground being broken in the field of reggae and he now has a near cult following of devotees.
It would be impossible to calculate the number of sides that Lee Perry has produced (he doesn't even know himself) but this collection attempts to provide the listener with a representative sampling of the 260 plus tracks that have (so far) been made available in Trojan's current catalogue and, at the same time, provide an introduction to those not yet familiar with his work.
We at Traojan hope you will enjoy this collection and, if you haven't done so yet, we hope you will delve further into the phenomenon of Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
