Bu
Moody, melancholy, minimalist, melodic with hints of romantic instrumental lyricism. All describe what you the listener will experience whilst listening to this much under the radar release by New Zealand based pianist Mike Nock. The opener track is almost like a hypnotic mantra with its repetitive bass notes much like some of the Necks music(I believe they might be New Zealander's as well!).As the album progresses the tracks become beautifully immersed in pizzicato bass lines and thickly emotive piano melodies. This is a straight ahead jazz album but it is not traditional jazz in any way nor is this even come close to free form style compositions.Ondas is a great album to listen to on a drive up the rocky coast on a cold gray New England morning! The albums spareness in no way detracts from the multitude of colorful timbre's Nock and his band pull from the jazzy ether. In my book a classic ECM release that needs to be opened up to a wider audience and re-pressed!
