The Belgian singer An Pierlé was born in 1974. After they had followed a classical piano training, she wrote in 1996 for the Belgian equivalent of the Grand Prix of Netherlands: HuMo's Rock Rally. Despite competition from bands such as Novastar and Arid, she won this talent show. By her striking performance (she sings and plays the piano while they were on a kangaroo ball) and her personal lyrics, she was soon compared to Tori Amos. Her debut cd Mud Stories from 1999, except in Belgium Netherlands also in well-received. For the successor Helium Sunset (2002) she wrote eleven new songs, some with her musical partner and producer Koen Gisen. Still, are the piano playing and the voice of the most important and almost automatically Pierlé wander the mind again to Tori Amos. Fortunately, there is also room for musical experiments, as evidenced by the use of gitaarvervormers, synthesizers and cellos. By this variation remains the album until the end comes Pierlé near buoys and singers like Jewel, Heather Nova, Sinéad O'Connor (in the song Sing Song Sally) and PJ Harvey (in the aggressive Sister). All in all rated An Pierlé with Helium Sunset a spacious enough that earned her a gig at Pinkpop 2002, concerned.
