ME
This is a gem of what I call soul jazz but theres micro-moments where the band is sort of treading a little experimental territories. Sample and the band take YOU the listeners on a voyage of funky electric piano and bass riffs created to keep your interest and none of this is too "soft jazz" like. The music has that warm, thumping hook laden sound that made the 1970s such a wonderful era for jazz and a lot of new an upcoming genres of music. Theres some smoking piano licks Sample lays down in the deeper end of the album and the remastered cd sounds fantastic. The Crusaders at least early on i.e. 1971-1976 pushed themselves and used clever motif's to drown you the eager listener in their stream of groovin' creations.By the end of the 1970s something about this band changed and tho I have never 100% discounted Joe Samples, Stix Hooper and Wilton Felders contributions the energy and vitality of their early works "sans" vocals remains timeless. This is music one can always go back to and re-listen with a fresh bit of interest.Oh and Larry Carlton really places some special guitar licks in for good measure thus adding a little more sugar to this audio delicacy!
