It's nice to see that DRUM FONDU have got their act together & have put a CD out. "Racing On TV" shows they haven't lost their novelty approach, but have instead honed their sound to a much crisper, more interesting & above all harsh sound - and hooky it is too. "Mindzapping" has the power of NINE INCH NAILS, although not the width or compositional prowess (not that they'd want to he considered serious musicians like that). The quirkiness of the early MAGAZINE-like approach has been roughed up into a plodding, grizzled mutant offspring of the same. "Green Strings" sequences into the room repleat with whistly feedback sounds & quirky keyboard playing an irritatingly catchy tune - they ought to make music for video games - they have that effect. "Its Late" is a more plodding, slow-paced thing with shouted words (the vocalist, tuneless, has a certain something, albeit an abrasive something) which twists & turns with serpentine stealth. "Busdriver" will be familiar to those who bought the demo tape of a couple of years ago, and to those who heard the snatch of it on the SOFT WATCH #2 cassette. It's been given a rougher edge, a more tight composition yet still retaining it's essentially chaotic body of noise. "Om Zeep" is a faster, tighter, more straightforward track, given the vocalist's quirkiness. It stops & starts, driving this way & that, not so much searching as exploring the possibilities within a finite scope. DRUM FONDU are either a Pop group with too many rough edges to become commercial, or a bunch of mad scientists using music as their medium to ensure World Domination.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
