This album is surely one of the reasons why the Too Pure label was so important in the mid-90s. Laika combined a nervous, jazzy energy with dreamlike soundscapes and poetic lyrics. Their music is for my ears heavily influenced by electric Miles Davis (post-On The Corner), but also shows the sensibility of the shoegazer scene. The arrangements are highly original and adventurous - no wonder, since Guy Fixsen was one of the eingineers of My Bloody Valentine's masterpiece "Loveless". In lack of other ways to classify, Laika were often called "trip hop". For me this makes no sense. They may share a bit of the dark energy of Tricky, but are closer to the experimental (post-)rock of Margret Fiedler's former band Moonshake. "Silver Apples Of The Moon" sounds still strong and fresh today and may be their most brilliant album.
