So even though Slam's album releases have been increasingly complex and melodic, what they were first known for -- slamming, solid techno -- is in full evidence on their 12"s and remixes, some of which have been gathered here on COLLECTING DATA. On the first disc, they take on artists big and small: Sasha, for instance, gets "Coma" transformed into a dub techno-like track, while Radio Slave's "Bell Clap Dance" bubbles with its subterranean rhythm. Spencer Parker's "Untitled Head" gets some undeniable funk, which echoes their own track, "We Doin' This Again?" These are club stompers, through and through, from the electronic tweets of Josh Wink's "Everybody to the Sun" to Dot Allison's dark, ringing "Cry." On the second disc, Slam showcases their own tracks, which, for the most part, stick to the deep and rhythmic. "Varience" is as thick as poured concrete, and the darkness that infuses "Metro Noir" creeps into the gradual build and squeal of "Hot Knives." "Maffaking" keeps things on the underground level, and while none of the tracks really distinguishes itself, the overall feel is one of throbbing energy begging to be released on the dancefloor. Massive fun.
