Basement Jaxx's albums have always suffered from the "singles 'n' stuff" phenomena (also known as "killer 'n' filler." For every marvelous track, there's one that makes you reflexively reach for the fast forward button. But on their 5th album, _Scars_, I think they've finally broken the curse. It holds together remarkably well as a cohesive work, and while there are weaker tracks, there's nothing that makes you wonder who cut the Jaxx boys' dope with chalk. Certainly, they lean more towards the slower side of things, but this helps them show their more sensitive side. "Stay Close" might be wan R'n'B, but the French vocals of "Distractionz" are the thing of pure romance. The guest vocalists are of particular note here: Santigold juts her hip out in "Saga" and Sam Sparro lends a high-energy pop vibe to "Feelings Gone." Even Yoko Ono's hippie freakout on "Day of the Sunflowers (We March On)" has its peculiar charm. If you just want the danceable singles, "Raindrops" leads the way. But my money is on country music-inflected "A Possibility" (with the inimitable BJ Cole) or the surprise hit, the gentle and quietly gorgeous "My Turn." Well done, boys: these are scars worth showing off.
