The skittering that kicks off "Sex Is A Contract, History Is A Trick" on Uniform's PROTOCOL lays the groundwork for Lydia Lunch's growling spoken word, while "Day 7 In The Season Of Mistakes" frizzes Olga Naiman's voice until it's almost incomprehensible. On the instrumental side, "Lucid Lucid Lucid" is dark and ambient, while the guitars of "The Cynics Lantern" drones on and on, and "Warmth Is Ebbing From Things" is spare and empty. The horns of "The Symbolist" circle chaotically, while "He's Above His Station" thrums with a sort of electrical warmth. A coolly challenging album.
