This is an edit, an update of what i wrote when R.I.P was released, because then i didn't enjoy it, but now i have absolutely fallen for it. You can read the original bellow, so that the development of my ideas concerning the album can stay registred. After an initial indifference towards R.I.P, i missed it.Indeed, and i missed it because i really got hooked by its sound, even though it seemed to me there was something i could not understand, or could not grab. I now feel like this music doesn't evoke physical sensations on me. I mean, even the most cerebral electronic music like autechre can evoke physical sensastions, even though rarely, but R.I.P... it is completely weightless. There is no mass to it, nothing to grab or touch with your ears. It's the most abstract sound i have heard in recent years. There is where the value of it resides, for me.Also i can't feel any colour in it. Feels like one of those old black and white pictures that were shot in a very bright day, and the sunlight was directly flooding into the machine's lens.R.I.P might take a while to grow on the listener, like how it happened with me, even thought i think it was an exception, because this sound is immediately attractive, but then takes a long while to discover...--Let me just start by saying that hype is a very bad phenomenon, which affects and is unfair for musicians worse than for listeners. Actress has been hyped up to tremendously high proportions, and i don't think that was good for him. Before it was released, i read interviews where he talked about how the album would approach the theme of death, and all his ideas and unique view caught my attention. When it was released i listened to it a lot but, nothing really happened. Actress has achieved a very peculiar sound, and that's the only thing i like about this album, and that makes me return to it. Other than that, it is excessively smudged, to the point of losing the clarity of its intentions and ideas (if there are any). I get angry with this record, because it seems to me that he had pretty much everything to make it cohesive, solid, unique-sounding, organic, ethereal even, and then just wasted it. Next time i hope things don't get that blurred and smudged, but instead feel a bit more controlled and directed.
