On _What’s Next?!_, the Alter Ego boys get their album _Why Not?!_ remixed by a bevy of heavyweights. Carl Craig, for instance, smoothes out the rough edges of “Gary,” while Tiga slows it down for a blippy experience. Deepgroove and Jamie Anderson go deeper for their take of “Queen Anne’s Revenge.” But overall, the remixers seem a bit too in love with Alter Ego’s unique, twisty brand of electro techno, and the mixes don’t reveal much. The usually-great Dirk Leyers (with partner Nerk) doesn’t appreciably alter “Fuckingham Palace,” (Joakim, similarly, seems to add another layer of samples and cymbals), and Tim Deluxe’s spin on “Why Not?!” simply adds a more house-based beat (Adam Sky’s version, on the other hand, dirties up the electo some). DJ Koze , on the other hand, Latins up “Jolly Joker” with some additional percussion and an modified piano line, while retaining the ‘laughing’ synth of the original, and Supermayer hit the same track with a funk bass without having it overwhelm the track. Modeselektor threaten to go old-skool rave hardcore on “Fuckingham Palace,” but pull back. Alter Ego reminds them all how to do it right with their slow-grind but peppy, “Baby Kraut,” which closes the album.
