A long, long time ago there was an independent label called Mute Records. Very small in the beginning. Mostly noisy electronic music that appealed to some. Times changed and their electronic boy band had a hit. Mute was making money. A boy split from the band and with a woman they recorded beautifully noisy electronic music. Mute was making more money. By this time Mute music was being sold all over the world.Mute was also very good with finding music that didn't quite fit in. Some was popular, some had a limited audience, but somehow it all mixed together.This combination of expansion and worldwide hit records continued. Mute made more money, but didn't forget where they started. They still made some very noisy records.This pattern continued for years, but times change. Some of the legacy musicians weren't selling anymore. The core group of listeners had other priorities. The world stopped listening.The label needed a larger entity to embrace the vision. For the most part this is where the classic Mute Records ended.But this compilation is a snapshot of what made Mute Records brilliant.Cd 1, tracks 7-10 is a cluster of electronic joy. From tape effects & primitive electronic noise generators to vintage drum machines and synthesisers to as many sounds a laptop can contain. Until other forms of noise construction are invented, this is a very microscopic history of electronic music. Like looking at a cell through a microscope before you zoom in.It's all there, you just have to listen a little closer.During the great embrace things seemed ok at first, then some of the favorite bands were no longer there.Tracks were turning up on compilations.Music was being repackaged. Some in a surroundable listening experience. Others would say not enough immersion.The Boy Band were taking their music away. Other musicians were taken away.One brief affiliation with a German band and it was all over.The larger entity was gone.A fragment of Mute Records still survives, but their shirts and merchandise seem to be more interesting than their current roster.(on a side note, my favourite Mute shirt from 20 years ago has developed some tiny holes. I am devastated. It is impossible to find a replacement.)

Whatever
Track 10 on CD1 is a wonderful cover version of The Smiths classic track "There is a light that never goes out". It is worth the price of this release on its own!
