I could hardly ever transfuse in words on how many levels does Sphinx rock my boat. It boasts a unique, chameleonesque, distinguishing feature, enabling it to satisfy regardless the occasion. According to Marcel Fengler, this was the first cut made on his own label - and boy - he will have to outdo himself twice to make it sound this nice. Dominated by an aura of robust tripiness, it just lures you in with be it the punchy percussion, the humble yet overwhelmingly energetic bass line and then the hook. Cutting mid through hopeless desperation and unsubstantiated optimism, its whistling tones are something you won't be getting out of your head that soon. Personally, it's been four years now.Not often does a certified banger work just as fine in a more moderate, if I may, intimate setting. Each segment of this track, whichever one you decide to focus on, is equally as impressive. Making this, in my opinion, a desert island tune, that effortlessly juggles between light and dark. That said, I already dare call it a classic. Hidden Empire is, as previously pointed out, a larger than life rhythmic builder, however the world pretty much stops once the title track kicks off. Marcel Fengler has a thing going on with his frugal, yet well timed release schedule, and this is - IMHO - one for the history books to remember him for.

The B-side is what you should pay attention to. Along with his brilliant Berghain mix, Fengler's original productions have instilled in me a great amount of respect for him. He's not the most iconic or well-known Berghain resident but I would argue he's the most competent one. If you seek energetic, powerful techno, then check out "Sphinx", you won't be disappointed.

Fucking awesome release. Sphinx might be the most unique techno track released by one of the berghain residents in 2011 with it's mysteriously haunting yet incredibly catchy melody. Hidden Empire is a full scale rhythmic bumper journey which builds and builds only to pull you under all of a sudden. Knavish is just the atmospheric intro for Hidden Empire so not much to say there. Techno lovers will enjoy the A-Side, anyone who wants to obliterate the dance floor with pick the b-side. Chances are you'll hear this out ALOT in the coming weeks & months.
