Even though the highlight of Ultramarine's COMPANION is the full inclusion of their stellar remix EP, NIGHTFALL IN SWEETLEAF, the other versions of various tracks shows their range. "Weird Gear (US Remix)" shows them slowing down the original a notch and filling out the sound with the bass, while "Early Discovery" is more mellow, stripped-down, and soaked in dub than the album version. Both "Stella Connects (Edit)" and "Nova Scotia" seem to have more prominent basses, but both soon merges into their respective originals. The "Old Geezer Dub," however, diverges more significantly from its original, eliminating most of the dub elements for a more atmospheric mix. "Pansy (Live At Glastonbury)" offers a middle ground: it essentially retains the feel of the original, but with the addition of what one can imagine is a saxophone line. But it's the heretofore unseen track here that stands out the most: "Lovelife #1" is a slice of summery 70s pop, with a filtered bit of Moroder's "Love to Love You Baby" drifting in. A fitting companion to a superb album.

A brilliant and mostly under-appreciated/unheard latter-day collection of remixes and curios from Ultramarine's "Every Man And Woman Is A Star" period. Hugely human and warm in sound, a fantastic pastiche of rhythms and styles are represented in these new versions: no matter what remix techniques are applied to tweak the original versions, the open-armed, world-embracing spirit of Ultramarine shines through via melody and tone. If you liked the original album, this "companion" piece is a solid must. Get it, love it. And remember what music can make you feel.

As a collection this album is an excellent teaser. Obviously lacking the focus of _Every Man and Woman Is a Star_, the very diversity of sound found here astonishes. House, ambient, dub and deep groove converge in perfectly hummable melodies - the basic simplicity of Ultramarine's blueprint. Highlights abound: the foot-tapping joy of "Stella Connects (edit)", the propelling bass of "Saratoga (remix)", even the all-too-brief chillout interlude of "The Downer". "Old Geezer Dub" transmits 808 State with a sense of gentleness early techno often lacked. Never hardcore and always folksy, _Companion_ casts light on an approach sadly not followed up on by the music-making community.
