Dishadel
Williams Traffic, for their only album, have one foot in the dub world and one in the downtempo world, but when it comes together, like on the silky "La Fugitive," it turns out great. With the twitchy, mellow "Slow Down," they bring in some questionable vocals, but the creeping dreaminess of "Doxa" quickly re-establishes them. Their love of sampled cinematic conversations is one of the constant amongst the tracks, as is the easygoing feel. "I Man Dub" brings in more of a hip-hop feel with its samples, though the Middle Eastern flutes help ad another texture. The Middle Eastern instrumention infiltrates "Reflection" too, with the oud as its focus. "The Day After" adds a darker, more paranoid feel, while the horns and reversed drums on "Eastside" evoke a kind of nostalgia. But "Da Mistake" goes back to straight up dub, and "New York/Barbes" tosses jazz into the mix. This is the kind of traffic you don't mind getting stuck in.
