Musical Aura Island
Ever since I first heard the split album with MERZBOW & DUE PROCESS, I have regarded R & G as interesting & creative innovators. Their side of that first album (for me, anyway) was rich with crazy PYTHONesque humour - see review for full impression. The HYPNAGOGIA cassette dropped the humour, but still kept most of the density - the barrage of strange splinters of sound, all combining into fascinating, echinate explosions of noise. So you can imagine I was expecting much the same from this album. But, despite their veering away from 'normal' composition, and their use of microscopic, truncated sound, they have managed to create a very different feel to this album, while using a very similar approach. And the key word here is Minimalism - short, spiky, shocking, calming, crazy vignettes - 69 of them, following in order on the disc, most without titles, many seemingly repeats of previous 'tracks' in a curious Pelmanized arrangement. It's a recording guaranteed to baffle & confuse as much as it entertains. But the beauty of it's release on CD is that the listener can put this disc on random shuffle and repeat play, creating almost infinite arrangements. RUNZELSTIRN & GURGELSTØCK have finally found their medium! Below I will attempt a detailed, blow-by-blow description of each 'track'. This has made it a long review, but it needs the detail to even try to capture the sound."1) und" - foreshortened voices, animal growl, short tuned bursts. "2) un. gleich" - synch signal in harsh burst. "3) fehstartprinzip" - deep glass shatter, voices apparently backwards, treated mechanics, crazed screaming, with 1,2,3,4, intro, ending with gated smack. "4)" is another high-pitched signal - possible test signal. "5) und 1" - fades in from a distance, broken horn pieces, high-pitched voice, lunatic singing for self gratification, high pitched horn, trombone spiral. "6) Kammer/Rumpati Pumsti Krüppl (1-)" - more moody, composed with odd broken backdrop like bass end of treated piano with lunatic aria overhead, whistle, angry shouted climax cry, effected sound, more lunatic temper tantrums, animal impressions, mad laughter, destruction. "7)" - tiny piano notes. "8) nagel/ei" - synch signal, fragments of gated, indescribable sound. "9)" - count in to odd, almost structured piece. "10 Gehirnblähungen (Johannes-Paul muss ina Spital)" - distant bell. "11) Lausiges Krückenmaterial" - gated fragments of noise, distant bell, crumbled voice. "12)" - flagellation. "21)" - mechanical, clockwork, repeating smacking beat & accordian Folk fragment. "22) CKR b-b 111 BL-K..." - machine whirl, muffled voices gated, electronically enhanced voice, clicks, crackles, snaps, whistles, sync signal. "23)" - animal in struggle with short semi-human growls, sawings, shuffles & clicks, distant flocks of birds. "24) Frühschoppen" - sync/test signal. "25)" - crunch, buzz, scratching as of thick tape or Velcro, tinny drum roll. "26) all rights reversed" - human bird scratch. "27) la.ma" - odd little complex tune, as if played on sampled elastic bands over biscuit tins, ending by speeding up. "28) entpersonalisiert (2-) (Wechsel-)" - fragments of gated noise, electronically treated. "29)" - intake of breath, test signal, fragments. "30)" - whistle, feedback, plink, mad sneeze, laugh, shout, gated tape snatch, smatterings of shattered noise. "31) (teils auch)" - crunching & accordian, smacking, looping structure with improv. playing. "32) KOPL LOKI PLOK" - more accordian, forming foundation for primative banging beat, laugh, raspberry, door creak, scrunching of glass, deafening, jarring blast of sound, broken gurgling as of mad dentists victim as he forces his hand down their throat, clock ticks. "33) einsichten in die wirklichkeit" - scrunch, breathy rhythm. "34) Eberdorfer" - muffled wailing turning to mentally-disturbed cry. "35) Gesangs-" - voice sustains, rises, cries harsh. "36) beispiele" - vocal, similar to previous track with telephone bell sound. "37) S.H.H.C. (1-4)" - chaos of splintered sound, complex, horns, fairground sirens, truncated guitar. "44) (selbstkontakt)" - accordian jazzling jingle continues. "45)" accordian jingle, strange and static, yet ever moving. "46)" - shuffles, violin-like rise & fall, smacking brief drum pattern, cello moan, belch, laughter, specks of sound, two note structure. "47)" - ringing drag. "48)" - yawn, glug, strange gated noises. "49)" - thump, starkk, bony sneeze, whistle, hawking phlegm, yell. "50) atemübg" - panting. "51" - small vocal fidgets, large yell. "52) Rumpsti Pumsti" - mechanical structure, almost robotic voice. "53)" - deafening mechanical rhythm as if composed & played by mad machines with WHITEHOUSE attitude. "54)" - wobbling FX noises, heart-pained monster words as it self-flagellates. "55) Eltern im Kinderohr" - crunch & roar of monster voice banging metal against self. "58)" - dog yap, scrunch. "59)" - dog growl, crunching. "60)" - dog yap, crunching. "61)" - dog growl. "62)" - clicking, dog yap, crunching of household objects, human animal sounds. "63) Gute Wege" - ? "64)" - voice, slowed-down laughter, sudden jumping sounds. "65) ...zum niedertrampeln" - background music with lunatic fit of yelling in frustation or pain, accompanied by laughter. "66) 1× (bei abwesenheit..." - short mechanical, harsh rhythmic structure. "67) 1× ...jeglicher..." - similar mechanical rhythmic piece, a touch less harsh. "68) 3× genussempfindungen)" - takes the same strange metallic tuned sculpture a step further. "69) bei dr. brunzig (1/2)" - concludes the album on scraps of found voice.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
