LINER NOTES: The BBC Radiophonic Workshop's long association with Doctor Who began in 1963 when Delia Derbyshire produced her ground-breaking realisation of Ron Grainer's enduring theme music. Synthesisers as we know them today had yet to be invented, so every note and meticulously timed swoop was painstakingly created on a bank of twelve test-tone oscillators, a noise generator and beat frequency generator, then cut together and mixed on magnetic tape. At the same time, Brian Hodgson created the startling sound effects for the materialization and dematerialisation of the Doctor's TARDIS. These sounds were created by torturing an old piano (by rubbing a key up and down its strings for example) and then recording and treating the resulting noises.
