The Ninja Tune stamp is usually an unmistakable sign of quality and Loka's debut, FIRE SHEPHERDS, is no exception. Leaning more on the jazz side of things, their songs have a loose, improvisational quality to them. Listen to how "Safe Self Tester" jumps in tempo halfway through, adding in a trumpet in the process and finally resolving into strings. For those who prefer a more thorough funk workout, "Meet Dad" has an undeniable groove. "Airfling" moves back toward open-ended dark-tinged jazz again, while the long "Freda Mae" throws in a noodling guitar for good measure. "Beginningless" has a gorgeous slow build that accretes over its running time. The two-part "Tabernacle" starts off in a full-orchestral glory before swinging into a bass-driven groove. A stunner.
