I stumbled upon this one, well, I guess by acidental purpose. I heard the B side track on a mix and thought how it sounds kind of awkward, so I was curious as to see whose music was I playing... The original version of Black Diamond Express is a weird mixture of live instruments, a buoyant blues harmonica thrown in for good measure, light and head nodding live drums, a funky and quirky bass played on a real bass guitar, and some tobacco chewing, not even the combined forces of Mount Olympus know what saying guy spits out pointless and undecipherable lyrics in a heavy texan accent, or something like it. Sounds like a lost in time and space polka band got drunk in front of a liquor store around eighty miles out of Austin and decided to kick it right there with the locals, on the self service's doorsteps. The scene veteran Jori Hulkonnen adds an electro, funked out bass line, slows down and "purges" the vocal, so you can actually understand what the guy is saying. Nothing revolutionary. In the words of one Bill Hicks, "What, I don't mean to sound cruel here, but I don't think we lost a cancer cure". However, mr. Jori laces the track with a highly addictive sequence, places a steady house beat, which had me moving around the dance floor like I was in yoga class. A groovy bass line which belongs more in straight up house sets, with the slight electro feel, and it sounds fun. Not the trendy electro house trash with those irritating cheap fart effects, break downs and cheap filtered build ups created on Reason presets at home two hours before the gig. Nothing really revolutionary, but complemented with the facetious and meaningless vocal this track is a win win situation for a crowd who is willing to cope with a pinch of something different.
