Bulgarian Drum & Bass head Robustus is fairly new to the scene. This hasn’t stopped him from brewing up his darkest, bass-heavy cuts for IM:Ltd. “Water Beast”/“No Despair” are an abyssal monster duo of tunes, featuring all the subtle techy nuances and growing unease he loves to create.
Disturbingly clean and cavernous, “Water Beast” quickly marks out a quick-stepping rut into towering bass and shards of snares, empty spaces somehow heightening that eerie sense of vertigo. Keeping the pace until the very end, this is a minimal stepper for the darker hours.
Compressed and cold, with bass as evil as a freak ice storm, “No Despair” is a misnomer – this track is laden with the stuff. Echoing and filled with dread and malevolence, there’s no getting away.
