When I first heard King of the Swingers (KotS) on a compilation, it was a standout track. KotS is a extremely groovy combination of old jazz&vocal samples ripped from a vinyl, drum & bass and breakbeat. It has a soul. Genuine blockbuster. Few years later I got to this album. Even after repeated listens I wasn't sure what to think about it. Now I can say I was dissapointed. Why?Let's get this straight - this album had a significant impact on development of South African breaks scene and I respect that. It was a starter for success of African Dope Records. However musically it's not only fame and glory. It looks like one-hit-album with KotS being the hit. The rest is more or less fillers. Specifically there are 4 unconcealed fillers (intro, outro, 2 interludes). With exception of track 2 everything else is a variation on KotS - has the same build-up, uses the same or very similar samples, Makesome Breaksome being the best of them. Tracks 2 and 3 introduce reggae samples. However once you have heard KotS, you can hear it in each of these tracks - but KotS can be only one. The rest are just clones.I rate this album 3 stars - one for importance, two for the music. Two stars down for repetitiveness which makes the album boring.
