I find this is an album that I very much have to be in the right mood for. If I'm not in the right place to appreciate its charms, it strikes me as rather twee and polite, but if I'm craving something gentle, nurturing, delicate and pretty, this fits the bill perfectly. Hanne's vocals are beguiling and subtly expressive, but what actually impresses me as much if not more is the production. There is great space to the arrangements and sound design, and an organic quality to the integration of the acoustic and electronic instruments so that neither feel tacked on or out of place. It's jazzy and experimental and folksy, while actually exercising great restraint in all of those areas. One senses that Hanne is brimming over with ideas, but manages to reign in her sensibilities so that the result is coherent yet richly expressive. Quite a feat!
