It is no easy task to blend the cerebral with the soulful - the two tend to stand at opposing corners in the deep house world and producers are often forced to choose one or the other - to mix both is a lofty aim. MadderModes may not have set out with this merger in mind when launching the project - Mental Space - but the end result is striking in its effortless fusion. Released under the artists' own label, Shift Coordinate Points, the EP consists of two tracks: Mental Space and Human Science. The titles, of course, lead one to assume there will be a strong degree of technicality and complexity behind the songs and indeed there is; what is surprising is the level of personality and moodiness that also exists.

The first track, Mental Space, is the heavier piece to the 12 inch. Awash in a murky, low tone surge of bases jostling for space amongst a tough kick, here is where we see the darker side of MadderModes' character. The palpable eeriness behind the white noise crackles and gas leak effects make it ideal after hours head-down, eyes-closed music. What is unique about the tune is how it is doesn't let itself become trapped by the low octave nature which can be oppressive if overdone. MadderModes places chime chord progressions along the way to lift the listener to another plane and finds a perfect antidote to the stoic kick drum by laying a tight patter of wood blocks so as to form a lively, up-tempo pace. It is, in short, a true display of the artist(s) playing with contradictions, keen to experiment with the many angles of club music, and ready to show all sides of their personality.

Human Science, breaks out an intriguing shaker and some long-held, minimally shifting pads as a warm welcoming. Wistful keys add a certain melancholic feel that establishes the tune as a deep one while the bold clap and hats above an undulating baseline provide the rhythmic ebb and flow effect. It is the arrangement and layering of Human Science's many elements and sounds that make it stand apart. Crackled vocal samples give a raw, human touch, sharp stabs make an electric pulse, and snaps and pops promote an unexpected randomness. The essential components are here but a careful ear is required to catch them all.
