Slow Reverse caused quite a lot of excitement with the release of their debut album a while back. The band’s unique mix of warm electro beats, hypnotic guitar loops and breathy female vocals was unique in the Thai indie scene.
This album features all the tracks from that debut album, remixed and reinterpreted by an interesting variety of indie mavericks. From the unpredictable excitement of Stylish Nonsense’s remix of “Moving” to the ingenious indie pop of Bear Garden’s version of “When The Worlds Collide,” Illumination offers up plenty of variety while maintaining the mood of the original Slow Reverse versions.
The album opens with a fun, spacey Cyndi Seui remix of “Apollo,” which is followed by a cool 80s sounding Stargazer remix of “Live Action Sequence.” Yuri’s Nominee, who also provided beautiful illustrations for the CD booklet, remixes “Tuesday” into fun, complex slice of futuristic synthpop, while Basement Tape’s folk rock version of “The Illusionist” provides a nice contrast to end the album.
Illumination also comes with a surround sound DVD featuring videos for every song on the original debut album. Rather than run-of-the-mill music videos, each of these clips is like a beautiful short film.
Illumination is well-worth seeking out for fans of Slow Reverse or any of the artists involved. It’s an album that you can get totally immersed in, and one that offers up new surprises with every listen.
