DRING, Nôze's second album for Get Physical, continues their raiding of European musical traditions for the purpose of making them funky. "C'era Una Volta" blends bits of Italian jazz with a more Eastern orientation for a quietly groovy track, while the more atmospheric "Cinq" floats in your eardrums. But the party really gets started with the Balkan-flavored "Dring Dring" -- it's a horn-blast of joy. "Exodus" shifts the tempo into a finger-snap of downtempo jazz before "In The Back Of My Ship" slides in with some surreal and silly dub. "Nubian Beauty" returns to some downtempo vibes, once again grounded by some gravelly, blues-inflected vocals, but the beats return with the dark jazz-tech of "When Tiger Smoked," and that moodiness filters into the jazzy "Marabout" before it bursts out of its shell. "Willi Willi" ends the album on a country-western twang. Though not as energetic as SONGS ON THE ROCKS, this album still holds its own.
