I only bought this for the original version of [upiter], and the amazing Sterac remix of the same track, which is the actual reason that prompted me into seeking this 2x12" out, after I was exposed to its bleeping hook and relentless percussion on Chris Liebing's "U60311 Compilation Techno Division Vol. 1" DJ mix. The original has this incredibly simple and stripped down structure, consisting of only a short acid bleep layed over a very pulsating bass line and clapping drum kick, steadily rolling around 130bpm. The whole percussion pattern breaks down from the 04:33 mark and then the whole minimal acid goodness comes back rougher and louder some seventy seconds later. Absolutely hypnotic, minimal and irresistibly head nodding! Sterac is smart enough to keep the phenomenal hook in his remix, but it's as though he increased its velocity by adding percussion not as banging as the original's, but has way more cymbals. The music is definitely faster, with Sterac introducing a few breaks followed by build-ups, which is a nice touch since his track runs on for over nine minutes, so it would have been ultimately painful to hear the exact same sound pattern for such a long time. Very effective DJ tool as well. In my opinion, Bandulu's remix goes absolutely nowhere, it completely spoils the effective simplicity and catchiness of the original, as it distorts the hook so much it doesn't even resemble T-Quest's tune. Or, it's just me so hooked on the original that I cannot cope with the slightest idea of deviation from it... 4 Dogs is a floating journey of minimalism, acid and melody. Think of tracks such as Garnier's Acid Eiffel, Solar Quest's Acid Eye Full, or certain Plastikman tunes from his "Artifakts (BC)" album. It's not bad, but totally out of place and time here. It should have been left out, in my opinion, and both the original version of [upiter] together with Sterac's remix should have been released on a single vinyl. Superb dance floor mayhem! How deep can you bleep?
