I bought this mix off the shelf when it was first released, drawn by the beautiful sleeve design and intriguing tracklist. I loved it from the very first listen, and have played it countless times. It has aged better than most progressive trance compilations from the same era, and I've always ranked it beside contemporary releases from GU and Renaissance in terms of track selection and aesthetic. The mixing does not approach British progressive purity, but makes up for it in creative, slamming momentum characteristic of sunbelt American trance DJs from that period (D:Fuse, Christopher Lawrence, Sandra Collins, etc). What sets this mix apart from many other American compilations of the progressive era is the cohesive concept and feeling. Slipstream is more than just a good mix with well-produced tracks -- it's a contained experience, rooted in the self-assured glory of circa 2000 progressive trance, and more specifically the glossy, trippy American vision of the genre. The title soundly reflects the overall feeling that the scene tried to achieve. The track selection wavers between ethereal and driving, which Deepsky immortalized in Stargazer, here included as the X-Cabs remix. I don't think any other mixes made use of Skyscraper - The Hymn, which in the context of Slipstream feels like 2000 progressive trance distilled. Tragically underappreciated in comparison to better-known mixes from UK DJs and labels.
