Notes
Hungaroton release, with Maria Basilides, Ferenc Székelyhidy, Imre Palló, etcIncludes text.
"Several of the ''Hary Janos'' songs, plus its gorgeous Intermezzo, are included on a disk entitled ''Kodaly Historicals'' (LPX 12420), a collection of recordings made by His Master's Voice in 1928, featuring Izabella Nagy and Imre Pallo, the soprano and baritone who created the main roles at the work's premiere, in 1926. Paired with these excerpts is a selection of the composer's simpler, more straightforward folksong settings, as well as exuberant, if not particularly tight, performances of two children's choruses. Given the antiquity of these recordings, the sound is not at all bad, thanks to the excellent transferring abilities of EMI's Keith Hardwich, an engineer responsible for many other sonic restoration projects over the last several years."
