Commissioned by the COMUS Music Theatre, Ra. was premiered by 33 singers, dancers, actors and instrumentalists in Toronto at the Ontario Science Centre in May of 1983. Ra.'s duration is determined by the time between sundown and sunrise and will thus vary from 9 to 11 hours depending on the time of year and the latitude at which it is performed.
