Notes
The Base--Chanute Technical Training Center, Major General Lloyd P. Hopwood, Commander, is one of 8 such Centers in the Air Training Command devoted to the technical training of officers and airmen to prepare them for important positions on the Aerospace Team.
Over 200,000 technicians completed courses at Chanute during World War II. Named after aviation pioneer Octave Chanute, the base first trained pilots for World War I "Jennies." Courses are taught to over 22,000 military and civilian personnel.
The Band--
The Air Force Band of the Midwest consists of 48 airmen and one officer. The mission of the band is to:
a) Provide music for military formations and other appropriate ceremonies.
b) Help further the recreation and entertainment program at all Air Force installations in the Midwest by providing concert music, dance orchestras, glee clubs, instrumental combinations, and individual musicians.
c) Help further Air Force and national objectives by favorably influencing domestic and international attitudes toward the Air Force and the United States.
During its 21 year history, hundreds of thousands of Midwest residents have enjoyed the programs of this band. Beginning in 1961 the band began extensive concert tours in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and Indiana.
The band has appeared at the Illinois State Fair; International Freedom Festival at Windsor, Canada; Cobo Hall Exposition Center in Detroit, Michigan; Wisconsin State Fair; and many other events throughout the Midwest.
On July 4, 1962, The Air Force Band of the Midwest presented a patriotic program entitled "An American Panorama," (Side I), in the University of Illinois Stadium before an audience of over 50,000 people. The work was an original composition by Captain Jimmy Roland, Commander/Conductor of the band and Airman John McCord, Arranger for the band. Captain Roland and Airman McCord collaborated once again in September 1962 to present another original composition entitled "Flight," (Side 2), to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the United States Air Force.
